Every square donated to Blanket Statement becomes part of a larger community blanket. In this post, we take a look behind the scenes at how hundreds of individual contributions become cozy blankets for Project Linus.

About Project Linus

Project Linus is a national non-profit organization that provides handmade blankets to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. Since its founding, Project Linus has delivered more than 10 million blankets nationwide.

The Journey of a Blanket Block

Collection: Blocks are gathered from conference participants, logged, and organized by color.

Layout & Arrangement: Blanket Statement then arranges 24 to 49 blocks into attractive patchwork designs.

Seaming: The blocks are crocheted or mattress-stitched together with coordinating yarn.

Bordering: A clean decorative border (single crochet or crab stitch) is added around the perimeter for durability and finish.

Blanket Statement then contacts their local Project Linus chapter and arranges for pick-up or delivery.

Quality Check & Labeling: Each blanket receives an official Project Linus label and is inspected for safety (secure tails, softness, washability).

Delivery: Local chapters deliver the blankets to pediatric hospitals, shelters, and crisis centers.

If you’ve ever attended an all-day conference, faculty meeting, or professional development workshop, you know how hard it can be to sit still. Many of us need our hands engaged moving whether it is doodling, taking notes or knitting to keep our minds alert and receptive.

The Conference Dilemma

We’ve all seen attendees staring at their phones during presentations. While some might be taking notes, many are checking email, reading news, or scrolling through feeds — activities that actively compete for cognitive attention and pull focus away from the speaker.

Knitting and crocheting do the exact opposite. Because the hand movements are repetitive and tactile, they satisfy the urge to fidget without drawing brain processing away from the presenter.

Crowdsourcing Comfort

Instead of just knitting for ourselves, Blanket Statement turns every conference hour into something tangible: 7" x 9" knitted or crocheted squares that are joined together into blankets for Project Linus, an organization providing security and comfort blankets to children who are ill, traumatized, or in need.

How You Can Participate
