About Blanket Statement

Learn about the Blanket Statement project, productive fidgeting at conferences, and our partnership with Project Linus.

Why Blanket Statement?

Folks who knit or crochet when attending talks and meetings do so in order to help maintain focus on the talk. Some of us are just not wired to sit still. Using our hands keeps our brains from wandering from the speaker.

We’ve all seen it: people checking their phones during conference sessions. Maybe they are looking up something relevant to the session, but likely not. Then there are those people knitting and crocheting during conference sessions. You can bet that they are paying attention to the speaker. Don’t believe it? Ask them! Then ask the person on the phone the same question.

Knitting at conferences

Fidget Productively at CSTA 2026

Blanket Statement advocates productive fidgeting. Before you head into your conference sessions:

  1. Pick up supplies: Come by the Pickcode booth and pick up yarn and knitting needles or crochet hooks to help make a blanket for a child in need.
  2. Learn to knit: Don’t know how to knit? Come by the Pickcode booth and learn! It takes just a few minutes to learn the basics.
  3. Crowdsource a blanket: What are we making? We are making blankets for Project Linus, one block at a time. It’s crowdsourcing a blanket!
  4. Drop off completed blocks: When you finish your block, drop it off at the Pickcode booth. Be sure to fill out a tag so we can give you credit!
